Chủ nghĩa đế quốc là sự thành lập và duy trì một nền kinh tế, văn hóa, lãnh thổ bất bình đẳng giữa những quốc gia và thường là hình thức của các đế quốc dựa trên sự thống trị và lệ thuộc. Thuật ngữ chủ nghĩa đế quốc thường đề cập đến những lãnh thổ địa lý và chính trị như Đế quốc Ba Tư, Đế quốc La Mã, Đế quốc Ottoman, Đế quốc Bồ Đào Nha, Đế quốc Tây Ban Nha, Đế quốc Hà Lan, Đế quốc thực dân Pháp, Đế quốc Nga, Đế quốc Trung Hoa, Đế quốc Anh, Đế quốc Mỹ, Đế quốc Nhật.
