Người Sinhala là một dân tộc chiếm đa số ở Sri Lanka với tỷ lệ 74% dân số Sri Lanka[13]. Tổng số có khoảng 15 triệu người Sinhala trên thế giới. Họ sống chủ yếu ở trung bộ, phía nam và phía tây Sri Lanka. Theo truyền thuyết, họ là hậu duệ của Hoàng tử lưu vong Vijaya người đến từ Đông Bắc Ấn Độ đến Sri Lanka trong 543 TCN. Bản sắc người Sinhaladựa trên di sản, ngôn ngữ và tôn giáo của họ. Đại đa số người Sinhala là phật tử Theravada tử và nói tiếng Sinhala, một ngôn ngữ Ấn-Arya.
