Từ tháng 12 năm 2003, tôi phát triển một thiết kế mới cho Trang Chính với vài người khác ở đây. Ba thiết kế sau, chúng ta đã phát hành thiết kế mới vào tháng 4 năm 2005.

Đang khi tôi đi thăm trường Đại học Stanford ở Ca Li vào mùa hè 2004, tôi tình cờ gặp với Wikipedia tiếng Khmer. Ở đây họ sử dụng một thiết kế giống vầy lắm. Hai dự án Wikibooks và Wikisource bằng tiếng Việt vẫn đang sử dụng thiết kế này, nhưng cộng đồng Khmer không dùng nó nữa.

Hai cột xám

Vào tháng 11 năm 2004, tôi quyết định làm một thiết kế nguồn gốc của tôi, vì tôi đã có nhiều kinh nghiệm về phác họa website rồi. Vào lúc này, phần mềm MediaWiki đã sử dụng thiết kế Monobook mặc định, cho nên tôi muốn thiết kế này hợp với nó.

Bộ tab

Thiết kế này chia trang ra thành ba bốn tab riêng, dùng mã nguồn giống trang tùy chọn. Quan niệm dùng tab được lấy từ Wikipedia tiếng Catalan. Xem trang thảo luận này để biết về cách làm thiết kế này hoạt động đúng. Thiết kế này không còn hoạt động, vì JavaScript trong MediaWiki đã thay đổi nhiều, nhưng có thể cập nhật nó để lại hoạt động.

Đơn giản

Thiết kế này giống "Hai cột xám", nhưng không có các đường khung và màu nền. Nó cũng lại đưa vào phần "Ngày này năm xưa", trang trí phần "Wikipedia theo chủ đề" với những hình chụp đẹp, và xếp phần "Dự án" theo bốn loại tài nguyên.

I've been working on redesigning Trang Chính, since it looks so incredibly messy, outdated, and unwelcoming. I've made two designs so far: 1 and 2. I won't replace the current Trang Chính anytime soon; we have to do the following first, and it's going to take awhile:

• Start the category pages for each category listed on my new designs. I've been translating the first paragraph of the English version, and simply using that for the category page. Then I usually copy that text over to the article on that topic. For example, Category:Sinh học and Sinh học basically have the same first paragraph. The idea is that each article we write will be assigned to at least one category, so that the category pages will eventually contain good lists of topics.
  • It'd probably be a good idea to write the pages that are linked from those category pages, too, so that this website doesn't look like a (rather nice-looking) façade.
• Start translating the This Day in History pages, like we used to. See 23 tháng 4. We'll take the content of these calendar entries and use them for a template that changes daily, for the This Day in History section (Ngày này năm xưa). (When you start one of these pages, please translate the entire page on en:, omitting certain items if you feel they are irrelevant to a website in Vietnamese. That way, we get information on all kinds of events; not just ones you're familiar with.)
• Figure out what articles should be featured under Bài viết nổi bật. Right now, I have Gia Nã Đại under there, just as a preview – it's not featured yet.
• Find time to update the Tin tức section, or leave it out of the redesign until we can find someone to update it regularly. I personally think displaying news on the front page is important, but right now the links within Tin tức will probably just show visitors how little we've written.
  • While we're at it, we've got to start updating Thời sự as well. This can simply be copying news from Template:Tin tức.
• Write Wikipedia:Unicode, which tells users how to get a Unicode font that can handle Vietnamese.
• Clean up Wikipedia:Cộng Đồng a bit.
