Calculating the colors

The details of how the colors were calculated and the state of Polish national colors choice in Wikipedia are described thoroughly in Flag of Poland. A short summary is presented below.

The colors you see here were rendered into RGB (sRGB) for web display, based on the xyY color space description provided by Polish law and a permissible deviation expressed as a CIELUV specification. The transformation from those to hexadecimal RGB values was calculated on 29 November 2006 at the Polish Wikipedia talk page about the Polish flag by Polish Wikipedian DeJotPe. The colors in RGB are as follows: white: #E9E8E7 and red: #D4213D. Note, that the assumed white point is 6500K, and that the color shades you see here depend on your browser and screen settings, and on the surrounding screen context. An intensely luminous light background will make the upper half appear slightly gray. Many websites which show Polish national colors loosely approximate the legally specified colors by using basic HTML colors: white #FFF and red #F00.

Continuing efforts are being made to better approximate for universal computer display the official white and red of the Polish flag, as well as to obtain a ruling from the Polish government on the matter of displaying the flag as a luminous computer image. Accordingly, this flag depiction will be updated as future developments warrant.

Official legal specification

Colors of the Republic of Poland are given by the specifications in the appendix no. 2 to the Coat-of-arms, Colors and Anthem of the Republic of Poland, and State Seals Act: Dziennik Ustaw of 1980, Number 7, Item 18, with successive amendments.

The Coat of Arms etc. Act specifies the x,y,Y coordinates of the national colors in the CIE 1976 color space as follows:

Which version to use?

This flag represents the direct mathematical interpretation of the law. It should be used whenever you want to refer to the Polish national colors as defined in the legal system and converted to sRGB. However, the result of calculation is by many treated as controversial because of slightly gray shade instead of white in the upper half. Therefore, Polish Wikipedians decided by vote that this version should not be used when just the symbolic version is required. This, for instance, includes all templates and infoboxes with Polish Flag or Coat of Arms. The symbolic version features HTML named colors white/crimson as defined in web colors palette.

Prezentowane kolory zostały skonwertowane do przestrzeni RGB (sRGB) dla celów WWW, bazując na ustawowej specyfikacji podanej w przestrzeni kolorów xyY wraz z dopuszczalną tolerancją wyrażoną za pomocą modelu CIELUV. Konwersji na wartości szesnastkowe RGB dokonał DeJotPe 29 listopada 2006 na stronie dyskusyjnej artykułu o fladze Polski. Kolory w przestrzeni sRGB są następujące: biały: #E9E8E7 i czerwony: #D4213D. Przyjęty punkt bieli wynosi 6500K, a zatem odczuwane odcienie kolorów są uzależnione od ustawień przeglądarki, monitora i tła. Jasne tło wokół flagi powoduje, że górna połowa jest odczuwana przez większość ludzi jako jasnoszara. Wiele stron WWW prezentujących polskie symbole narodowe używa barw luźno zbliżonych do ustawowych: biały #FFF i czerwony #F00.

Ustawowa definicja barw narodowych

Barwy Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej są zdefiniowane w załączniku nr 2 do Ustawy o godle, barwach i hymnie Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej oraz o pieczęciach państwowych: Dz. U. z 1980 r. Nr 7 poz. 18 z późniejszymi zmianami.

Którą z wersji wykorzystać?

Niniejsza flaga reprezentuje bezpośrednią, matematyczną interpretację prawa. Powinna być używana wszędzie tam, gdzie odwołujemy się do polskich barw narodowych w kontekście definicji ustawowej przekonwertowanej do przestrzeni sRGB. Jednakże, wynik przeliczenia jest traktowany przez wielu jako kontrowersyjny z uwagi na barwę jasnoszarą zamiast białej. Z tego powodu, polscy Wikipedyści zdecydowali w głosowaniu, że ta wersja nie powinna być używana w miejscach, gdzie potrzebny jest tylko symbol polskiej flagi. Obejmuje to m.in. wszystkie szablony i infoboksy zawierające grafiki flagi czy godła. Symboliczna wersja korzysta z nazwanych kolorów HTML white/crimson z palety kolorów webowych.
