These are programs of the National Park Service established for the purpose of documenting historic places. Records consist of measured drawings, archival photographs, and written reports.

  • Significance: The San Francisco Mint was, until the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, but a branch of the parent establishment at Philadelphia. By this Act it was placed on an independent basis. It had however, attained greater importance than the Philadelphia Mint previous to this, and took the rank of the foremost in the United States due to its location as the central depot of all the gold and silver products of the Pacific Coast. / The Old Mint was begun in 1869 under the auspices of the architects of the Treasury in Washington, D.C. and was designed by A.B. Mullett, their chief architect. Contracts were signed on November 27, 1869 for the construction of the 2nd Mint. The cornerstone was laid on May 26, 1870 for San Francisco's 2nd branch mint. Built at a cost of $2 million to supplant the first ranch mint established here in 1854 on Commercial Street . It was supplanted in 1937 by still a newer mint building.
