The Race's first Detour was a choice between Mariachi Madness or Great Bulls of Fire. In Mariachi Madness, teams had to find one of 350 Mariachi performers at Plaza Garibaldi that was faking their performance. They would then have to take the performer to a judge. If they were correct, they would get their next clue. If they were wrong, they would have to try again. In Great Bulls of Fire, teams had to assemble a torito, a papier-mâché bull, as part of a firecracker display. Once they had the approval of a judge, they had to light it up to get their next clue.

In the Race's first Roadblock, one team member had to search through the nearby caves and find thirteen pieces of an Aztec (Teotihuacano) mask. The final Roadblock of the Race paid tribute of California's wine industry in Santa Barbara

Airdate: May 13, 2016[9]

In the first Roadblock of the leg, one team member had to choose a safety instructor then make their way to the penthouse above Angelus Plaza. There, while being tethered from a rappel line, they had to perform a giant leap from a height of 130 foot (40 m) to grab their next clue which was hanging in mid-air. If they failed, they had to rappel to the ground and try again, but with each failed attempt the clue would be moved closer.

In the Final Roadblock of the Race, the team member who did not perform the first Roadblock would have to arrange letters and hashtags on a series of wine barrel lids to spell the names of the cities in the order visited on the Race. Then, they must hang them with the hashtags on the barrels in chronological order:

Hashtag City
#MuseoSoumaya Mexico City
#WalledCity Cartagena
#JetStream Geneva
#MontBlanc Chamonix
#12thCapital Yerevan
#PeaceBridge Tbilisi
#GulfMetropolis Dubai
#GatewayToBali Denpasar
#ParametricDesign Shenzhen

Once the hashtags and the cities were in the right place with the proper spelling, they would receive their final clue.

Additional tasks
  • After completing the first Roadblock, teams took a helicopter to Santa Barbara.
  • At Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, teams had to take a marked dinghy from the harbor and find the Theresa Ann boat. Once the boat was found, the fisherman on the boat would give them their next clue.

Once returned to safety, teams had to join their two halves to read their next clue.
  • After finishing the second Roadblock, teams were instructed to search the grounds for the Finish Line.
Additional note
  • During the flight from Guangzhou to Los Angeles, the final three teams all received a free upgrade to business class on the direct flight home to the United States.
