Phật giáo Nichiren là một nhánh của Phật giáo Đại thừa dựa trên những lời dạy của linh mục Phật giáo Nhật Bản thế kỷ 13, Nichiren (1222-1282) và là một trong những trường phái Phật giáo Kamakura. Giáo lý của nó bắt nguồn từ khoảng 300 400 chữ cái và chuyên luận còn lại được quy cho Nichiren.^[1]^[2]^[3]

Với sự ra đời và những nỗ lực thịnh vượng của Soka Gakkai International, được gọi là "tôn giáo 'xuất khẩu' nổi bật nhất của Nhật Bản để thu hút một số lượng đáng kể những người cải đạo không phải người Nhật, Phật giáo Nichiren đã lan rộng khắp thế giới. Trong Phật giáo Nichiren, có hai bộ phận lớn khác nhau về cơ bản là liệu Nichiren có nên được coi là một vị bồ tát của trái đất hay không, một vị thánh, một vị thầy vĩ đại hay một vị Phật thực sự của thời đại thứ ba của Phật giáo.^[4]^[5]^[6] Một số tôn giáo mới của Nhật Bản là các nhóm giáo dân lấy cảm hứng từ Nichiren. Nó được thực hành trên toàn thế giới, với các học viên trên khắp Hoa Kỳ, Brazil và Châu Âu, cũng như ở Hàn Quốc và Đông Nam Á. Các giáo phái lớn nhất là Soka Gakkai/ (Soka Gakkai International), Nichiren Shu và Nichiren Shoshu. Phật giáo Nichiren tập trung vào giáo lý Kinh Hoa Sen rằng tất cả mọi người đều có Phật tánh bẩm sinh và do đó vốn có khả năng đạt được giác ngộ trong hình thức hiện tại và đời hiện tại của họ. Nichiren đề xuất một hệ thống phân loại xếp hạng chất lượng của các tôn giáo và các trường phái khác nhau của Nichiren có thể phù hợp hoặc phản đối mạnh mẽ với bất kỳ hình thức Phật giáo hay tín ngưỡng tôn giáo nào khác.
