Acidobacteria là một ngành vi khuẩn mới được đề xuất gần đây, với các thành viên của nó là đa dạng về mặt sinh lý học và có mặt ở nhiều nơi, đặc biệt là trong đất, nhưng lại chưa có đủ đại diện trong nuôi cấy.[3][4][5]

Các thành viên của ngành này là đa dạng về mặt sinh lý học, một số loài là ái axit, và lần đầu tiên được công nhận như là một nhóm riêng lần đầu tiên năm 1997.[6] Loài đầu tiên của ngành này, Acidobacterium capsulatum, được phát hiện năm 1991.[7] Các loài đáng chú ý khác có Holophaga foetida,[8] Geothrix fermentans,[9] Acanthopleuribacter pedis[10] và Bryobacter aggregatus.[11] Do mới được phát hiện gần đây và phần lớn vẫn chưa được nuôi cấy nên sinh thái học và trao đổi chất của các loài vi khuẩn này vẫn chưa được hiểu rõ.[4] Tuy nhiên, các vi khuẩn này có thể là các sinh vật có đóng góp quan trọng cho các hệ sinh thái, do chúng rất phổ biến trong các loại đất.[12]

Cũng do môi trường sống là đất tự nhiên của chúng, nhóm chưa phân loại II của Acidobacteria đã từng bị nhận dạng như là tác nhân gây ô nhiễm các thuốc thử của bộ công cụ tách chiết ADN, điều có thể dẫn tới sự xuất hiện có sai sót của chúng trong các bộ dữ liệu quần thể vi sinh vật (microbiota) hay bộ gen học tổng thể (metagenomics).[13]

Phân loại hiện tại được chấp nhận dựa theo Danh sách các tên gọi sinh vật nhân sơ với vị trí hiện tại trong danh pháp (LPSN)[14][15] và phát sinh chủng loài lấy theo LTP phiên bản 123 dựa trên ARN 16S ribosome của Dự án cây sự sống muôn loài.[16]
