Cuộc Nội chiến Sierra Leone (1991-2002) bắt đầu vào ngày 23 tháng ba năm 1991 khi Mặt trận thống nhất cách mạng (Revolutionary United Front - RUF), được hỗ trợ bởi các lực lượng đặc biệt của Mặt trận yêu nước quốc gia Liberia (National Patriotic Front of Liberia - NPFL) của tổng thống Charles Taylor, đã can thiệp vào Sierra Leone trong một nỗ lực nhằm lật đổ chính phủ của Joseph Momoh. Cuộc nội chiến đã kéo dài 11 năm, bao trùm cả nước, làm 50.000 người chết.[1]

Trong năm đầu tiên của cuộc chiến, RUF đã kiểm soát những dải lãnh thổ lớn ở phía đông và phía nam Sierra Leone, nơi giàu có về kim cương. Sự phản ứng thiếu hiệu quả của chính phủ và việc bị mất ngành công nghiệp khai thác kim cương đã khiến Hội đồng lãnh đạo quốc gia lâm thời (National Provisional Ruling Council - NPRC) đảo chính quân sự vào tháng 4 năm 1992[2]. Vào cuối năm 1993, Lực lượng vũ trang Cộng hòa Sierra Leone (Sierra Leone Army - SLA) đã thành công trong việc đẩy phiến quân RUF đến biên giới quốc gia với Liberia, nhưng RUF đã quay lại và cuộc chiến vẫn chưa kết thúc. Tháng 3 năm 1995, Executive Outcomes (EO), một công ty tư nhân của Nam Phi chuyên cung cấp lính đánh thuê, đã được thuê để đánh bại RUF...
