Nhờ những nỗ lực của Félix Morisseau-Leroy, ngôn ngữ đã được công nhận là một ngôn ngữ chính thức ở Haiti cùng tiếng Pháp từ năm 1961, trước đó thì tiếng Pháp là ngôn ngữ viết duy nhất ở quốc gia từ thời độc lập năm 1804. Chính tả của tiếng Haiti được chuẩn hóa năm 1979. Vị thế ngôn ngữ chính thức của tiếng Haiti đã được ghi nhận trong hiến pháp của quốc gia năm 1987.
