These four throughlines are common in all complete stories. It is extremely important that you take the time to think about your story’s four throughlines. |

1. EVERY STORY HAS 4 VIEWPOINTS |
|||
Viewpoint: Main Character (Rick) + Conflict: Fixed Attitude = Main Character Throughline (Rick) |

To create a complete story in Dramatica, you'll need to tell your story from four distinct viewpoints: |
|||
Rick has a fixed attitude toward life in general, and women in particular. He is content to hide out in Casablanca, avoiding commitment to anything -- particularly another woman who might hurt him the way Ilsa did. |
|||
1) The Main Character viewpoint shows the story through the eyes of the main character only. |
|||
Viewpoint: Impact Character (Ilsa) + Conflict: A Situation = Impact Character Throughline (Ilsa) |
|||
Ilsa’s predicament is that she’s committed to Laszlo, but in love with Rick. Rick has the only means to get Laszlo safely out of Casablanca, but he's not in a giving, or forgiving, mood. |

3) The Overall Story viewpoint shows all the characters and events in the story from a dispassionate bird’s- eye view. |

Viewpoint: Overall Story (All Characters) + Conflict: An Activity = Overall Story (All Characters) |

4) The MC / IC viewpoint focuses on the relationship and passionate conflict between the Main and Impact characters. |

2. EVERY STORY CONTAINS FOUR AREAS OF CONFLICT |

Rick, wounded by lisa’s betrayal, protects himself from being hurt again by hiding his emotions. By baring her own heart to him and trusting him with her future, Ilsa shows Rick that the gain is worth the pain, and he changes to a loving, giving person again. |
|||
Furthermore, to create a complete story in Dramatica, you’ll need to describe four areas of Conflict. |
|||
1) Conflict in an Activity or Endeavor involves characters in an ongoing, changing enterprise—such as the search for the Holy Grail. |

2) Conflict in a Situation has characters dealing with a fixed state of affairs—such as being blind or stranded on a deserted island. |

3) Conflict with a Fixed Attitude involves characters affected by bias or prejudice in their outlook toward something—such as expressing blanket statements about race, creed, sex, etc. |

Matching a Viewpoint with an area of Conflict creates a Throughline. Illustrating each area of Conflict from their respective viewpoints ensures a complete and consistent story without plot holes. |

In the film Casablanca, the Overall Story viewpoint coupled with Activity creates the Overall Story Throughline—all the characters are involved in escaping from Casablanca. The Main vs. Impact viewpoint, coupled with a Manipuation as the area of conflict, creates the Main vs.Impact Story Throughline—In order to change Rick into a caring, loving man again, Ilsa emotionally manipulates him (even though it dooms their romance.) |
