Dưới đây là danh sách các thuật ngữ được sử dụng để mô tả hình dạng lá trong việc diễn tả và phân loại cây trồng. Lá có thể đơn giản (lá đơn hay lá mỏng) hoặc lá kép (có nhiều lá chét). Cạnh của lá có thể là đều hoặc không đều, có thể là mịn màng hoặc có lông, lông cứng hoặc gai. Cấu trúc lá

Lá của hầu hết các cây bao gồm một cấu trúc phẳng gọi là lá mỏng, nhưng không phải tất cả các lá đều bằng phẳng, một số có hình trụ. Lá có thể đơn giản, với một lá đơn, hoặc lá kép (có nhiều lá chét). Cấu trúc lá được mô tả bởi một số thuật ngữ bao gồm:

Hình dạng lá và lá chét

Là một trong những đặc điểm dễ nhìn thấy hơn, hình dạng lá thường được sử dụng để nhận biết thực vật.

	attenuate		gốc lá	Having leaf tissue taper down the petiole to a narrow base, always having some leaf material on each side of the petiole.
	auriculate		gốc lá	Having ear-shaped appendages near the petiole.
	asymmetrical		phiến lá	With the blade shape different on each side of the midrib.
	caudate		ngọn lá	Tailed at the apex.
	cordate	cordatus	phiến lá	Lá giống hình trái tim, gốc lá tròn và lõm, và thuôn dần về phía ngọn lá.
	cuneate	cuneatus	gốc lá	Triangular, wedge-shaped, stem attaches to point.
	cuspidate		ngọn lá	With a sharp, elongated, rigid tip; tipped with a cusp.
	deltoid or deltate	deltoideus	phiến lá	Dạng tam giác
	digitate	digitatus	phiến lá	With finger-like lobes, similar to palmate.
	elliptic	ellipticus	phiến lá	Bầu dục, điểm nhọn ngắn hoặc không có.
	ensiform	ensiformis	phiến lá	Dạng như lưỡi kiếm, dài, hẹp, mũi nhọn.
	emarginate		leaf tip	Slightly indented at the tip.
	falcate	falcatus	phiến lá	Sickle-shaped.
	fenestrate	fenestratus		Large openings through the leaf, see perforate. Sometimes use to describes leaf epidermal windows.
	filiform	filiformis	phiến lá	Thread- or filament-shaped.
	flabellate	flabellatus	phiến lá	Semi-circular, or fan-like.
	hastate	hastatus	phiến lá	hình đầu cái lao có ngọn lá nhọn;
	laciniate		phiến lá	Very deeply lobed, the lobes being very drawn out, often making the leaf look somewhat like a branch or a pitchfork.
	lanceolate	lanceolatus	phiến lá	Dài, rộng hơn ở giữa, dạng như ngọn giáo.
	laminar			Flat (like most leaves)
	linear	linearis	phiến lá	Long and very narrow like a blade of grass.
	lobed	lobatus	phiến lá	Being divided by clefts, may be pinnately lobed or palmately lobed.
	lorate	loratus	phiến lá	Having the form of a thong or strap.
	lyrate	lyratus	phiến lá	Shaped like a lyre, pinnately lobed leaf with an enlarged terminal lobe and smaller lateral lobes.
	mucronate		ngọn lá	Ending abruptly in a small sharp point as a continuation of the midrib.
	multifid	[multi + findere]	phiến lá	Cleft into many parts or lobes.
	obcordate	obcordatus	phiến lá	Heart-shaped, stem attaches at the tapering end.
	oblanceolate	oblanceolatus	phiến lá	Much longer than wide and with the widest portion near the tip, reversed lanceolate.
	oblique		leaf base	Asymmetrical leaf base, with one side lower than the other
	oblong	oblongus	phiến lá	Having an elongated form with slightly parallel sides, roughly rectangular.
	obovate	obovatus	phiến lá	Teardrop-shaped, stem attaches to the tapering end; reversed ovate.
	obtrullate		phiến lá	Reversed trullate, the longer sides meet at the base rather than the apex.
	obtuse	obtusus	ngọn lá	Blunt, forming an angle > 90°.
	orbicular	orbicularis	phiến lá	Circular.
	ovate	ovatus	phiến lá	Oval, egg-shaped, with a tapering point and the widest portion near the petiole.
	palmate	palmatus	phiến lá	Palm-shaped, i.e., with lobes or leaflets stemming from the leaf base.
	palmately lobed	palmatus	phiến lá	Lobes spread radially from a point.
	palmatifid	[palma + findere]	phiến lá	Palm-shaped, having lobes with incisions that extend less than half-way toward the petiole.
	palmatipartite	[palma + partiri]	phiến lá	Having lobes with incisions that extend over half-way toward the petiole.
	palmatisect	[palma + secare]	phiến lá	Having lobes with incisions that extend almost up, but not quite to the petiole.
	pandurate		phiến lá	Fiddle-shaped; obovate with a constriction near the middle.
	pedate	pedatus	phiến lá	Palmate, with cleft lobes.
	peltate	peltatus	stem attachment	A round leaf where the petiole attaches near the center. An example would be a lotus leaf.
	perfoliate	perfoliatus	stem attachment	With the leaf blade surrounding the stem such that the stem appears to pass through the leaf.
	perforate	perforatus	leaf surface features	Many holes, or perforations on leaf surface. Compare with fenestrate.
	pinnately lobed	[pinna + lobus]	phiến lá	Having lobes pinnately arranged on the central axis.
	pinnatifid	[pinna findere]	phiến lá	Having lobes with incisions that extend less than half-way toward the midrib.
	pinnatipartite	[pinnatus partiri]	phiến lá	Having lobes with incisions that extend more than half-way toward the midrib.
	pinnatisect	[pinnatus + sectus]	phiến lá	Having lobes with incisions that extend almost, or up to midrib.
	plicate	plicatus	3-d shape	Folded into pleats, usually lengthwise, serving the function of stiffening a large leaf.
	reniform	reniformis	phiến lá	Dạng giống quả thận, bề rộng lớn hơn bề dài và lõm ở gốc lá.
	retuse		leaf tip	With a shallow notch in a round apex.
	rhomboid or rhombic	rhomboidalis	phiến lá	Diamond-shaped.
	rounded	rotundifolius	ngọn lá hay gốc lá	Circular, no distinct point.
	semiterete		3-d shape	Rounded on one side, but flat on the other.
	sinuate		3-d shape	Circularly-lobed kind of leaves
