Essentially, the community was itching to replace its five-year-old design, and I just didn't have the time to push my proposal fully to completion. There were two immediate issues:
- Several people disliked how I did away with the "Welcome to Wikipedia" element across the top. Instead, Wikipedia is introduced at the bottom, similar to where many blogs and news outlets put similar information. My rationale was that people read the welcome only once but have to glance past it for the rest of their lives. However, I admit that it gives the page a colder feel than the design that won. (That design recycled a header I proposed years ago.) I'm thinking about adding an unintrusive welcome that turns into something more useful for returning visitors, like an invitation to edit or join a WikiProject based on geolocation.
- The design relies heavily on CSS features that have poor browser support. Only Chrome, IE 10, and future versions of Opera support everything. In particular, for most browsers, I have to turn off flexboxes at narrower resolutions, resulting in ugly, uneven boxes.
I also got feedback that the section headings (like "BÀI VIẾT CHỌN LỌC") were too subtle. But I'm not convinced; I think everyone's just used to how we've always made the headings bigger and bolder than everything else on the page.
I fully intend to reintroduce this proposal within a couple years, once enough people are on today's browsers and I've had time to develop the ToolserverWikimedia Labs tool for cropping and uploading background images. In the meantime, do you have any ideas that would make this design irresistable to Wikipedians, even to English Wikipedians? :^)
