Mùa thi thứ sáu của loạt chương trình American Idol lên sóng ngày 16 tháng 01, 2007 trên kênh truyền hình Fox Broadcasting Company. Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul và Randy Jackson lại tái ngộ khán giả trong vai trò thành viên hội đồng giám khảo, cùng người dẫn chương trình Ryan Seacrest.

Jordin Sparks thí sinh có số phiếu bình chọn cao hơn Blake Lewis đã giành chiến thắng của năm. Điều đặc biệt là mùa thi năm nay là có hai thí sinh Tốp 3 không bao giờ bị gọi tên vào nhóm thí sinh không an toàn (Jordin Sparks và Melinda Doolittle).

Chương trình được phát sóng lần đầu tại châu Á trên kênh STAR World năm 2007. Năm 2008, Đài truyền hình Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh mua bản quyền truyền hình và ra mắt khán giả trên kênh HTV2 từ ngày 07 tháng 05, 2008.

Độ tuổi bắt buộc đối với các thí sinh là từ tròn 16 đến 28 (ngày 06/08/2006); có nghĩa các thí sinh có ngày sinh từ 07/08/1977 đến 06/08/1990.

Cấu trúc

Vòng thi thử giọng được tổ chức ghi hình tại 7 thành phố lớn của nước Mỹ. Theo tường thuật của nhật báo The Los Angeles, tiến trình tổ chức cho mùa thi năm nay gặp rất nhiều khó khăn hơn các mùa thi trước: hơn 10.000 thí sinh xếp thành hàng dài đợi trong nhiều giờ liền để đăng kí tham gia, và vì quá đông nên hai trợ lý sản xuất chỉ cho mọi người hát thử trong 15 giây. Và cũng có rất nhiều người phản đối hướng giải quyết trên.

Những thí sinh vượt qua thử thách đầu tiếp tục phòng thử giọng đầu tiên và chỉ vài người trong số họ được chọn đi tiếp với sự đồng thuận của hội đồng giám khảo (Simon, Paula và Randy). Tiếp đến các thí sinh được thử thách ở nội dung hát không nhạc đệm. Hội đồng giám khảo sẽ ra quyết định "Đồng ý", "Không đồng ý" ("Yes" hoặc "No") để thí sinh được đi tiếp. Nếu thí sinh đạt sự đồng ý của đa phần giám khảo thì họ sẽ vào vòng Hollywood, những thí sinh còn lại bị loại.

Vòng Hollywood

Vòng "Hollywood" diễn ra ở trung tuần tháng 11, 2006, kéo dài 4 ngày liên tiếp tại nhà hát Orpheum - Los Angeles.

Các thí sinh được chia ra thi hai đợt, một đợt cho nam và một cho nữ. Thí sinh lên hát trực tiếp trên sân khấu dưới sự chứng kiến của toàn thể ê-kíp thực hiện, giám khảo và các thí sinh khác cùng giới. Một vài người tiếp tục bị loại. Những còn lại vào vòng hát nhóm.

Vòng thi thứ hai diễn ra vào ngày thứ hai và thứ ba, các bạn tự chọn nhóm và luyện tập trước buổi trình diễn chính thức. Sau khi trình diễn, giám khảo loại tiếp.

Ngày thứ tư, vòng ba được tiếp tục. Các thí sinh lần lượt hát đơn có ban nhạc đệm.

Loại còn 24

Lượt bình chọn cuối cùng của khán giả diễn ra tại Pasadena Civic Center ngày 14 & 15 tháng 01, 2007. Lần lượt từng thí sinh gặp riêng các vị giám khảo để nhận quyết định cuối cùng. Chỉ những người trụ lại cuối cùng có cơ hội bước vào vòng bán kết. Rồi họ lại được chia tiếp thành những nhóm nhỏ. Và cuối cùng chỉ còn 24 thí sinh chính thức bước vào vòng bán kết.

Thí sinh chung kết

Ngày 20 tháng 01, các thí sinh chung kết bắt đầu hát sống để thu hút sự bình chọn của khán giả về mình. Vòng thi bán kết chia làm hai đợt, cho hai phái. Chỉ 6 người mỗi phái, với số phiếu bình chọn qua hệ thống tin nhắn và điện thoại cao nhất, được vào vòng chung kết

Danh sách 12 thí sinh có số phiếu bình chọn cao nhất được công bố ngày 08 tháng 03, 2007. Đối với mùa thi năm trước, Tốp 12 phải cùng thực hiện một album tổng hợp trong lúc vòng chung kết vẫn đang diễn ra (đã loại 2 thí sinh). Cũng trong năm trước, tuần tự các thí sinh bị loại qua mỗi tuần, trừ tuần 25 tháng 04 và 02 tháng 05.

Jordin Sparks Jordin Brianna Sparks (sinh ngày 22 tháng 12, 1989 tại Glendale, Arizona. Cô tham gia thử giọng tại Seattle. Cô từng là một thíđăng She was a contestant on America's Most Talented Kid in 2003 and also appeared on the program's Tournament of Champions, on which she sang the Celine Dion ballad "Because You Loved Me" in her auditions. She is the daughter of former NFL defensive back Philippi Sparks. With her win, Jordin became the youngest Idol yet and joins the ranks of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks by winning without ever appearing in the bottom two or three. Melinda Doolittle (left) and LaKisha Jones Melinda Marie Doolittle (born 1 tháng 12 năm 1977) age 35 (29 at the time of show), auditioned in Memphis, and is from Brentwood, Tennessee. Despite being a professional back-up singer, she admitted she was still tense and nervous about competing in the show. She auditioned with "For Once in My Life" popularized by Stevie Wonder, and was met with universal praise from the three judges on her vocal ability. The judges did express concern about her nerves and told her to believe in herself. Her elimination the week before the finale had many critics and viewers in shock, and Simon Cowell looked extremely disappointed, as he felt that she deserved to be in the finale for "week to week consistency". She has sung back up for Aaron Neville, CeCe Winans, and Season 3 finalist George Huff. She also performed in the "Christmas Time" Tours in 2005 and 2006 for Contemporary Christian singer Michael W. "The crying girl" Ashley Ferl is a 13-year-old girl who has become known for crying during Sanjaya Malakar's and other contestants' performances on the Top 11 episode of American Idol 6. Ferl's family, who are from Riverside, California, obtained tickets on a website to attend the dress rehearsal of the program. Since Ferl cried a great deal at the rehearsal, producers offered her family seats for the final taping of the episode. Ferl started to cry not long after Malakar began his performance of "You Really Got Me", and because of this, Sanjaya came down to give her a hug after his performance. She was also shown crying for several more contestants. She admitted that she not only liked Sanjaya but also many other contestants. She has been asked who her favorite contestant is but could not just say one person. She liked everyone. At the end of the show, she went on stage a second time, and got a chance to hug and get autographs from all of the contestants and was introduced to the judges; she received a pair of earrings from Paula Abdul before the show began. Television vans from E!, Access Hollywood and Fox were waiting outside of her house the next day, and, that evening, NBC paid for Ferl's entire family to fly to the taping of the Today Show. She subsequently gave several other radio and news interviews to sources such as MSNBC, Fox News Channel, and Entertainment Tonight. Saturday Night Live spoofed both Malakar and Ferl following the former's elimination. Kristen Wiig portrayed Ferl in the sketches. Ferl has also been spoofed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live with Regis and Kelly and Family Guy, as well as mentioned on Best Week Ever and The Soup. Ashley Ferl returned during Malakar's performance in the finale and was again crying. She was briefly spoofed on Meet the Spartans. Ferl appeared on the show yet again during season seven, crying over contestant Jason Castro. Due to the "charity" theme of the show, no contestant was eliminated on the April 25 results show. This was a surprise both to viewers, to whom Seacrest promised the "most shocking elimination ever," and to the contestants. American Idol producer Ken Warwick responded saying that "It's not a conscious decision, It's just that the further we go in the series, there are less and less good singers, so the numbers are made up by more bad ones." Warwick said that he thinks everyone has the right to audition, and added that in some instances when there are singers with certain disabilities who just want to meet the judges, the producers will "turn the cameras off and bring them in. We give them a good experience." A series of provocative photos surfaced on the Internet of Season 6 Top 24 Contestant Antonella Barba. Teenager Sanjaya Malakar was sometimes seen as the season's most polarizing and talked about American Idol contestant, as he continued to survive elimination for several weeks. The weblog Vote for the Worst and satellite radio personality Howard Stern both encouraged fans to vote for Sanjaya. However, on April 18, after over 38 million votes, Sanjaya was voted off. On Tuesday, 17 tháng 4 năm 2007, the day after the Virginia Tech massacre, in which a student named Seung-Hui Cho used guns to kill 32 students and professors before committing suicide, while contestant Chris Richardson and Ryan Seacrest were discussing the shooting after Chris's critique, Simon Cowell apparently appeared to be rolling his eyes at the incident, when he was actually speaking to Paula Abdul and did not hear what Chris had said. To clear Cowell's name, a video was shown on the result show which showed Cowell and Abdul talking with an inset of Chris and Seacrest discussing the shooting. Also, Seacrest began the performance show by acknowledging what had happened the day before. Fans and critics alike were stunned at Melinda Doolittle's departure. Simon Cowell admitted that the sixth season's crown should have rightfully gone to Melinda. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe responded, noting that "[Idol producers] were so engrossed with the mentors and didn't really focus on the Melinda Doolittles of the show." Lythgoe also produces So You Think You Can Dance, and has noted that the dance program gives background information about its contestants, while American Idol focused more on its big name celebrity mentors, such as Tony Bennett, Gwen Stefani, and Jennifer Lopez. During the finale, the show went over its scheduled 2-hour time limit and ended at 10:09 PM EST. Many TiVo users claimed the recording show cut off before the new American Idol was announced shortly after 10 PM. FOX executives apologized; but this is not the only time the finale exceeded its time limit. UK edition For the UK back-to-back repeat of the performance and results shows on the following Friday night on ITV2, Cat Deeley presents additional sections preceding and following each commercial break, and follows the end of the show with a short interview with that week's eliminated contestant.
