Lớp Thú tên khoa học là Mammalia, gồm những loài có tổ chức cao nhất trong các lớp động vật có xương sống. Chúng có thân nhiệt cao và ổn định. Hệ thần kinh rất phát triển, đặc biệt là lớp vỏ xám của não bộ. Đẻ con và nuôi con bằng sữa. Trong một số tài liệu tiếng Việt khác gọi là (lớp) động vật có vú (động vật hữu nhũ), vì đặc điểm của chúng là có nhiều tuyến dưới da ngực, gọi là vú, tiết ra sữa để nuôi con mới sinh. Ngoài ra động vật thuộc lớp này có 3 xương nhỏ trong tai, da có lông, răng và não phát triển cao cấp hơn những loài lớp khác, tim có 4 ngăn, và máu nóng.

Lớp Thú có 3 dạng chính do thích nghi với môi trường sống:
- Dạng có đầu, mình, cổ và đuôi phân biệt rõ ràng: Dạng này chiếm đa số các loài trong lớp thú, các loài này chủ yếu là sống trên cạn. Ví dụ: Mèo, Thỏ, Trâu, Bò,Tê Giác,Hổ,Báo...
- Dạng có cánh: Dạng này thích nghi với môi trường sống không khí, có khả năng bay lượn. Giữa các ngón của chi, có lớp da, y như cánh của các loài chim, ví dụ:Dơi,... Hoặc màng da nối chi trước với cổ, chi sau, ví dụ:Chồn bay...
- Dạng thích nghi bơi lội: Cơ thể có các chi biến đổi thành các vây. Lớp da thì trở nên trơn, bóng hơn.Sống ở môi trường nước: Ví dụ: Cá voi, Cá heo, cá nhà táng,Cá voi xanh...

Trên thế giới hiện mới định danh được có 5500 loài, 1200 giống (chi), 152 họ. 46 bộ, 3 lớp phụ. Tại Việt nam mới chỉ phát hiện được 2 lớp phụ, 14 bộ, 41 họ, 252 loài.
