Istanbul (tiếng Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ: İstanbul, tên gọi trong lịch sử là Byzantium và Constantinople;[4] xem tên gọi của Istanbul) là thành phố lớn nhất Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ và thành phố lớn thứ 4 thế giới với dân số 12,8 triệu người, và cũng là vùng đô thị lớn nhất châu Âu tính về dân số.[1] Istanbul cũng là siêu đô thị, là trung tâm kinh tế, tài chính, văn hóa của Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ. Thành phố có 39 quận của tỉnh Istanbul.[5]

Đây là thủ phủ của tỉnh Istanbul. Thành phố này nằm bên eo biển Bosphorus có cảng tự nhiên gọi là Sừng Vàng. Istanbul từng là kinh đô của 3 đế quốc khác nhau là Đế quốc La Mã (330-395); Đế quốc Byzantine (395-1453) và Đế quốc Ottoman (1453-1923). Theo sau sự thành lập Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ năm 1923, thủ đô của quốc gia này đã được dời về Ankara. Istanbul là thành phố đặc biệt vì nằm trên hai châu lục là châu Âu và châu Á. Khu phố lịch sử của Istanbul được UNESCO công nhận là di sản thế giới.

Istanbul bao quanh phía nam Bosporus và khiến cho thành phố này nằm trên hai châu lục. Phía tây Istanbul thuộc châu Âu, phía đông thuộc châu Á. Diện tích thành phố 1539 km² còn vùng đô thị, hay tỉnh Istanbul có diện tích 5220 km².

Kinh tế

Istanbul sử dụng khoảng 20% lực lượng lao động của Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ, đóng góp 38% chỗ làm việc trong lĩnh vực công nghiệp của Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ. Istanbul tạo 55% giá trị thương mại và 45% doanh thu bán lẻ của quốc gia này, đóng góp 21,2% GDP, 40% thu thuế, 27,5 sản phẩm quốc gia của Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ.
