The country coefficient is used to rank the football associations of Europe, and thus determine the number of clubs from an association that will participate in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

The UEFA ranking determines the number of teams competing in the season after the next, not in the first season after the publication of the ranking. Thus, the rankings at the end of the 2015–16 season determine the team allocation by association in the 2017–18 (not 2016–17) UEFA season; however, the actual teams that will be participating in the {{Nowrap|2016–17}} UEFA season are determined at the end of the 2015–16 season when the individual association classifications and national cups are finalized.

This coefficient is determined by the results of the clubs of the associations in the [[Giải bóng đá vô địch các câu lạc bộ châu Âu|UEFA Champions League]] and the [[Cúp UEFA Europa League|UEFA Europa League]] games over the past five seasons. Two points are awarded for each win by a club, and one for a draw (points are halved in the qualifying and playoff rounds). Results determined by extra time do count in determining the allocation of points, but results determined by penalty-shootouts do not affect the allocation of points, other than for bonus points given for qualification into the latter rounds of the Champions League or the Europa League. The number of points awarded each season is divided by the number of teams that participated for that association in that season. To determine a country's coefficient for a particular season, the coefficients for the last five seasons are added. Bonus points are added to the number of points scored in a season. Bonus points are allocated for:
* Clubs that reach the quarter-finals, semi-finals, or final of either the [[Giải bóng đá vô địch các câu lạc bộ châu Âu|UEFA Champions League]] or the [[Cúp UEFA Europa League|UEFA Europa League]] (1 bonus point).
* Clubs that qualify for the group stage of the Champions League (4 bonus points).
* Clubs that qualify for the round of 16 of the Champions League (5 bonus points).

UEFA uses this coefficient system to decide which teams gain automatic entry to the group stage and which teams must go through qualifying. The teams who occupy the top three league places in the countries ranked 1 to 3 in UEFA competition gain automatic entry into the group stages for the following season’s Champions League competition. The first and second placed teams in the countries ranked 4 to 6 also gain automatic entry, as do the champions in the countries ranked 7 to 12. The Champions League and Europa League winners also get the chance to participate in the following season’s competition, with the Champions League title holders guaranteed an automatic entry into the group stage.

According to the UEFA regulations a National League needs to consist of at least eight clubs to be considered valid, otherwise no participants of such a league will be allowed to enter European competitions. Hệ số UEFA trong bóng đá châu Âu được thống kê để sử dụng trong việc xếp hạng và xếp hạt giống trong các giải đấu quốc tế và cấp câu lạc bộ. Ra mắt vào năm 1979,[1] hệ số này được UEFA, tổ chức quản lý bóng đá châu Âu tính toán.

Có ba loại hệ số được tính toán dành cho các giải đấu bóng đá nam:

Hệ số đội tuyển quốc gia

Hệ số đội tuyển quốc gia của UEFA là kết quả thi đấu của từng đội tuyển quốc gia châu Âu và được duy nhất UEFA tính toán hai năm một lần vào tháng 11; hệ số được xác định vào thời điểm tất cả các quốc gia thành viên UEFA kết thúc vòng loại của World Cup hoặc giải vô địch châu Âu tiếp theo.

Mục đích của việc tính toán hệ số nhằm xác lập một bảng xếp hạng UEFA chính thức sử dụng làm căn cứ xếp hạt giống các quốc gia châu Âu, phục vụ cho việc bốc thăm các bảng vòng loại và vòng chung kết các giải vô địch châu Âu. Trước đây cho đến năm 2006, hệ số đội tuyển quốc gia UEFA cũng được dùng xếp hạt giống để bốc thăm các bảng vòng loại World Cup khu vực châu Âu, trong khi đó việc bốc thăm vòng chung kết World Cup lại sử dụng hạt giống căn cứ vào bảng xếp hạng FIFA chính thức. Lý do mà UEFA ngừng sử dụng hệ số đội tuyển quốc gia UEFA để xếp hạt giống cho các bảng vòng loại World Cup là bởi yêu cầu của FIFA chỉ sử dụng bảng xếp hạng FIFA trong việc xếp hạt giống các đợt bốc thăm liên quan đến vòng chung kết World Cup.

Phương pháp tính và xếp hạng cũ

được giới thiệu lần đầu tiên vào năm 2003 và dùng để xếp hạt giống cho vòng chung kết Euro 2004 và vòng loại World Cup 2006. Cho đến khi kết thúc vòng chung kết Euro 2008, hệ số đội tuyển quốc gia UEFA được tính bằng cách chia tất cả số điểm đạt được (ba điểm cho một trận thắng, một điểm cho một trận hòa) cho tất cả số trận đã đấu trong hai vòng loại gần nhất của giải vô địch thế giới hoặc giải vô địch châu Âu.   3. Số bàn thắng trung bình ghi được mỗi trận cao nhất.
  4. Số bàn thắng trung bình mỗi trận sân khách cao nhất.
  5. Bốc thăm.

Ba kỳ cuối cùng UEFA sử dụng phương pháp tính này là vào các năm 2003, 2005 and 2007.[6]

Phương pháp tính và xếp hạng hiện tại

Vào ngày 20 tháng 5 năm 2008, UEFA công bố thay đổi hệ thống xếp hạng hệ số.[7][8][9] Bảng xếp hạng vẫn được tính hai năm một lần vào tháng 11 nhưng được tính theo hệ thống mới, giờ đây các đội tuyển dành được điểm xét hạng cho mỗi trận đã đấu trong cả chu kỳ đã kết thúc gần nhất (được xác định là tất cả các trận vòng loại và vòng chung kết) của cả giải vô địch thế giới và giải vô địch châu Âu, cộng thêm điểm xếp hạng cho mỗi trận đã đấu trong nửa chu kỳ gần nhất (được xác định là tất cả các trận đã đấu ở vòng loại). Điểm xét hạng của các trận đã đấu trong hai chu kỳ rưỡi trên sẽ được ghi nhận theo nguyên tắc dưới đây.

  1. 10.000 điểm dành cho mỗi trận đã đấu bất kể kết quả của trận đấu.
  2. Mỗi đội tuyển nhận thêm 30.000 điểm cho một trận thắng và 10.000 cho một trận hòa.
  3. Trường hợp trận đấu phải quyết định bằng loạt đá penalty, số điểm được tính như một trận hòa trong đó đội thắng loạt đá penalty được nhận thêm 10.000 điểm.
  4. Mỗi trận đấu tại vòng chung kết hoặc vòng play-off để xác định đội vượt qua vòng loại sẽ được thêm điểm thưởng, dao động từ 6.000 điểm cho vòng play-off hoặc vòng bảng World Cup đến 38.000 điểm cho trận chung kết.
  5. Mỗi bàn thắng ghi được nhận được 501 điểm, mỗi bàn thua nhận được -500 điểm.
  6. Hệ số được tính cho mỗi hai chu kỳ rưỡi bằng cách chia chia tổng số điểm đạt được cho tổng số trận đã đấu.
  7. Khi tính toán hệ số trung bình của hai chu kỳ rưỡi, chu kỳ gần nhất và nửa chu kỳ sẽ được tính gấp đôi so với chu kỳ trước đó.
  8. Cách tính đặc biệt được áp dụng cho các đội tuyển không tham dự một trong các vòng loại vì lý do là chủ nhà của vòng chung kết.
